PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device which enables a character to be inputted in a shorter period of time than a software keyboard, and therefore has improved operability, and also to provide a character input method using the same and a program therefor. SOLUTION: When continuous input frequency (n) to the same numerical key from a remote controller is "1" (S2), presence or absence of a key in the middle of selection/display of a picture is confirmed (S3). When the key in the middle of selection/display exists, it is returned to non-selection (S4), and a key corresponding to the inputted numerical key is selected/displayed (S5). When the key in the middle of selection/display does not exist, the key corresponding to the inputted numerical key is selected/displayed (S5). When continuous input frequency (n) to the same numerical key is "2" (S2 and S7), the character whose continuous input frequency is "2" and which corresponds to the inputted numerical key is displayed on a character input frame (S8). When the displayed character is selected/instructed (S9), it is judged whether next input is the same numerical key (S11).
