<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which permits a stable cleaning performance from the beginning, irrespective of the formed image state and image area rate with regard to the color image forming apparatus or the like, and to provide a process cartridge used in the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises a latent image carrier, a charging device, a latent image forming device, a developing device, a toner image transfer device, a cleaning device of cleaning toner, remaining on the latent image carrier with a cleaning blade and a lubricant applying means of applying lubricant on the latent image carrier. A new article photoreceptor unit detecting means is disposed on the body of an image forming apparatus. When a photoreceptor unit is detected as a new article, application operation, by means of the lubricant applying means, is performed.
