<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor device capable of reducing the number of different types of exhaust gas sensors and a method of operating the exhaust gas sensor in the exhaust gas after treatment system of an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: This sensor device measuring oxygen concentration at different places of an exhaust gas system 12 comprises first exhaust gas sensors 48 and 54 disposed before a catalyst body 44 and second exhaust gas sensors 50, 52, and 54 disposed at the rear of the catalyst body. Each of the first and second exhaust gas sensors both comprises an outside pump electrode 76, an inside pump electrode 80, a Nernst electrode 82, and a reference electrode 86. The first exhaust gas sensors are joined to first operation/evaluation circuits 56 and 92, and the second exhaust gas sensors are joined to second operation/evaluation circuits 108 and 112.
