PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively avoid various troubles including jamming, skewing and the breakage of a variable sheet guide resulting from the dislocation of the variable sheet guide. SOLUTION: The sheet storage device comprises a sheet tray 2 drawably mounted in a tray receiver 1 for storing sheets S and a sheet guide mechanism 3 for positioning the bunched sheets stored in the sheet tray 2. The sheet guide mechanism has at least the variable sheet guide 4 adapted to be relocated depending on sheet size. Between at least one variable sheet guide 4 and the tray receiver 1, a stopper mechanism 6 is provided for prohibiting the operation of inserting the sheet tray 2 into the tray receiver 1 under the conditions that the variable sheet guide 4 is dislocated from a regular position corresponding to the sheet size.
