PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recognition method of characters/figures capable of recognizing even characters/figures comprising dots, obscure characters/figures, and separated characters/figures. SOLUTION: A skeleton line extracted from an image is approximated as an aggregate of approximate lines each having a simple shape. In a target data extraction process S2, a group of approximate lines close to one another and handled as one unit is extracted as a target cluster. In a shape similarity calculation process S3, similarity of the shape of a master cluster formed of a group of approximate lines having shapes used as standards of characters/figures and the shape of the target cluster is evaluated. In the shape similarity calculation process S3, the position of a circumscribed rectangle set for the master cluster is matched to that of the circumscribed rectangle set for the target cluster, thereafter shape similarity is obtained from a distance between skeleton lines included in the target cluster and the master cluster, and the master cluster having high shape similarity is related to a category of the noted target cluster.
