PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus accurately forming image data of an original independently of deviation in the original in a main scanning direction. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus emits light to an optical unit at a position detecting position located between a resist roller and a read position of the original to detect the position of the original in the main scanning direction. Thereafter the image reading apparatus moves the optical unit to the read position to allow the optical unit to read the original at the read position. An image forming apparatus forms image data of the original on the basis of the position of the original in the main scanning direction detected by the position detecting position and image data obtained by reading of the original at the read position.
