A method is provided for purifying (meth)acrylic acid, in which a transition metal component is removed with good efficiency from a crude (meth)acrylic acid containing the transition metal component as an impurity. In removing a transition metal component by contacting a crude (meth)acrylic acid containing the transition metal component as an impurity with a cation exchange resin, water is added to said crude (meth)acrylic acid prior to the contact of the crude (meth)acrylic acid with the cation exchange resin. In a preferred embodiment, the transition metal component is manganese.
