PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of judging the state of a recording agent (remaining quantity, necessity or unnecessity of replenishment, solidification and deterioration, etc.) by detecting the quantity of the developer remaining in a recording agent container. SOLUTION: The recording agent is shifted from a 1st chamber 601 to a 3rd chamber 603 via a 2nd chamber 602 in the recording agent container 60. The presence or absence of the recording agent or the remaining quantity of the recording agent in the chambers 601 and 602 is detected by a CPU on the basis of the transmitted light quantities in the chambers 601 and 602 separately detected by recording agent sensors 81 and 82, and in the case the recording agent exists in the 1st chamber 601, but, not exist in the 2nd chamber 602, it is judged that the recording agent is solidified in the 1st chamber 601.
