PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which the amount of color misalignment can easily and speedily be estimated at all times, satisfactory color images with a minimized amount of color misalignment can always be formed by correcting the amount of color misalignment, which is highly accurate but requires long time, only when the amount of color misalignment exceeds a permissible amount as a result of the estimation, and the decrease in the productivity of monochrome image formation is prevented by estimating the amount of color misalignment only prior to color image formation. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a color misalignment estimation means. Prior to the start of image forming operations performed by the corresponding image forming means, the color misalignment estimation means writes the images of color misalignment detection patterns of respective colors for estimation onto the corresponding photoreceptors, transfers the written color misalignment detection patterns onto the transfer medium, and measures the thus transferred color misalignment detection patterns, thereby obtaining the amount of color misalignment.
