PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which improve a read image at low cost by disposing a carriage accurately at its home position. SOLUTION: The image reader stands by while the carriage of a read part 10 is disposed at its home position HP until a read start indication is made, and drives a stepping motor once the read start indication is made to move the carriage 12 from the home position HP to a rear start position YS, thereby reading a document G. At this time, an exciting current is applied to the stepping motor after the homing operation to fix the rotation, thereby expecting the read start indication while the carriage 12 is fixed at the home position HP. Thus, the carriage 12 is disposed accurately at the home position HP and the document is accurately read from the front end to improve the quality of a read image at low cost.
