PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus and an image compression method for displaying RGB 6bits each (total 18bits, 256K colors) by a frame buffer of RGB (red, green and blue) 565 (R=5bits, G=6bits and B=5bits total 16bits, 64K colors) without image quality degradation. SOLUTION: An RGB encoder A compresses dot data of images adjoining each other. A subtractor Sr, a subtractor Sg and a subtractor Sb output subtracted results of the data to an RGB encoder B and a format determining unit 913. The RGB encoder B compresses the data in a format different from that of the RGB encoder A according to the dot data and the subtracted results. The format determining unit 913 makes a data selector 914 select either an output signal of the RGB encoder A or an output signal of the RGB encoder B according to the subtracted results and write the selected signal in the frame buffer 92.
