PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine capable of improving exhaust emission further by effectively combining catalyst carrying technology on a combustion chamber wall surface and fuel injection control by a fuel injection device and intake and exhaust valve control by a valve system. SOLUTION: In an engine 1 provided with an electronic control type unit injector 14 injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber, catalyst coating layer 30 is provided on at least a part of the combustion chamber wall surface composed of a cylinder liner 4 inner surface, a cylinder head 2 inner surface and a piston upper surface. A unit injector electronic control unit (ECU) 13 controlling the unit injector 14 performing pilot injection of very small quantity of fuel for exhaust emission control before main injection of fuel under a predetermined operation condition of the engine 1 is provided.
