PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst having a hardly depressible activity. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the chlorine by oxidizing the hydrogen chloride with the oxygen, the catalyst contains at least one of Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Os, Ir and Pt metals or compounds among the Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Os, Ir and Pt metals or compounds. The Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Os, Ir and Pt metals or compounds may be used in the form of the carried compounds or may be used by oxidizing the same with an oxidizing agent or the like and may be used by reducing the same with a reducing agent or the like.
