PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hoisting device for an elevator which has a simple structure so that the hoisting device can be thinned, and by which predetermined strength and braking ability can be obtained easily. SOLUTION: The load acting on a sheave is supported by a housing 1 via an axial body 8 and a fitting body 4 to eliminate a supporting plate to be provided in the housing 1. This configuration realizes predetermined strength of a hoisting device, can reduce the weight of the housing 1, can reduce the production time, and reduces the production cost. The elimination of the supporting plate can result in further reduction in width of the hoisting device to facilitate the installation of the hoisting device in a small space. Additionally, by forming electromagnetic brakes 13 provided in symmetric positions integrally with the fitting body 4, the dislocation in attaching positions of the electromagnetic brakes 13 on both the ends is prevented to improve the reliability of braking action.
