The method involves supplying a reformate gas (40) which is capable of oxidation from a hydrocarbon reformer (30) in front of or in the particle filter (28) into the exhaust gas. The reformate gas can contain hydrogen and carbon monoxide as the constituent parts which are capable of oxidation. The reformate gas is supplied to the exhaust gas before it enters into an oxidation catalytic converter (24) mounted in front of the particle filter (28).
