An optical film for liquid crystal displays, characterized in that a sheet polarizer and a retardation film are so laminated that the absorption axis of the sheet polarizer and the slow axis of the retardation film is perpendicular or parallel to each other and the sheet polarizer is formed by laminating a transparent protective film on each side of its polarizer, in that transparent protective film has an in-plane phase contrast Re1 = (nx1 - ny1) x d1 of not more than 10 nm and a phase contrast in the thickness direction Rth = {(nx1 + ny1) / 2 - nz1 } x d1 of 30-100 nm, and in that retardation film has an Nz value, which is expressed by an equation of Nz = (nx2 - nz2) / (nx 2 - ny2), of 0.1-0.8 and an in-plane phase contrast Re2 = (nx2 - ny2) x d2of 60-300 nm. The optical film can realize an easily viewable display having a high contrast ratio in a wide range when applied to a liquid crystal display operating in the IPS mode.
