METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR FRACTURING BRITTLE MATERIAL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus by which a brittle material (liquid crystal glass 2) can be surely fractured compared with a conventional method and apparatus.

SOLUTION: The fracturing apparatus 1 is equipped with a first laser oscillator 8 for oscillating first laser light L1 and a second laser oscillator 9 for oscillating second laser light L2 having longer wavelength than the first laser light L1. The apparatus 1 is constituted so as to enable the irradiation of the liquid crystal glass 2 with the first laser light L1 and the second laser light L2 along with a parting line of the glass 2 from the surface 2A side. A fine crack C is formed in the rear surface 2B because the focal point F1 of the first laser light L1 is matched in the vicinity of the rear surface 2B in the liquid crystal glass 2. Further, since this fine crack is irradiated with the second laser light L2, the crack C grows in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal glass 2, and the crack C reaches the surface 2A from rear surface 2B. Thereby, the liquid crystal glass 2 is fractured.
