PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuator which prevents the breakage of a pillarlike magnetostrictive element. SOLUTION: The actuator comprises the pillarlike magnetostrictive element 51, which has one end formed as a fixed end and the other end formed as a free end and extends/contracts axially, a drive coil 54 which generates an electromagnetic field that extends/contracts the pillarlike magnetostrictive element 51 using drive currents, and elastic members (sponges 52a, 52b) arranged on both end faces of the pillarlike magnetostrictive element 51.
