<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator drive device for greatly reducing the weight of a balancing weight itself. <P>SOLUTION: At least one of an insulating transformer 5a for separating a customer power supply 1 from an elevator power supply and an inverter device 5b for inverting the output thereof into a variable frequency alternating current is incorporated in the balancing weight 10. An electrode is attached to one of a pair of guide rails 3, 7 for guiding the balancing weight 10 to form an power input passage to equipment incorporated in the balancing weight 10 so that power is input to the equipment via a contactor mounted on a guide shoe 4.
