<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power transmitting apparatus which has a very small back lash in the rotational direction. <P>SOLUTION: A surface 5 tapered in the axial direction is provided on the outer periphery of an inner race 1. Cam surfaces 6 forming wedge shape spaces between the tapered surface 5 and the cam surfaces 6 are provided on the inner periphery of an outer race 2. A retainer 7 arranged between the inner race 1 and the outer race 2 has pockets 11 at the positions corresponding to the cam surfaces 6. Tapered rollers 12 are arranged in the pockets 11. A switching means 13 is provided on one side of the retainer 7 in its axial direction. The tapered rollers 12 are engaged with the tapered surface 5 and the cam surfaces 6 by axially shifting the retainer 7 by means of the switching means 13. In addition, the tapered rollers 12 are engaged with each of the surfaces of the cam surfaces 6 tilting in the two opposite directions respectively.
