<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an all-optical switch and a method which realize XOR operation with a high extinction ratio, with a proper yield and using a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: The all-optical switch utilizes a Mach-Zehnder type optical circuit, having nonlinear optical elements which exhibit nonlinear refractive index changes arranged on a first arm and a second arm thereof, respectively and has a means to input first signal light to one or a plurality of nonlinear optical elements on the first arm; a means of inputting second signal light to one or a plurality of nonlinear optical elements on the second arm; a means of inputting a carrier light; and first and second means of making the intensity of the carrier light passing through the first and second arms zero, before a wave combining part of the Mach-Zehnder type optical circuit, when no signal light is inputted to the first arm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
