PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biochip substrate holding method constituted so as to equalize the holding mechanism of a biochip substrate, in both cases where a large number of samples are arranged on a biochip and the biochip is placed on a reader, not only to prevent the occurrence of the shift of a site position at the time of measurement, but also to dispense with position alignment, and to provide a biochip reader. SOLUTION: When a biochip, the biochip substrate of which is held on a pedestal to spot samples respectively on the array site on the biochip substrate, is measured by the biochip reader, the biochip substrate is held by the holding mechanism used not only at spotting, but also at measurement.
