PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water paint composition for coating the inner surface of cans which can form a coating film superior in workability and adhesion and not causing any change in the flavor and the taste of drinks, without using any constituent component originating from BPA (bisphenol A) and practically without using a surfactant worsening the steam-sterilization resistance of cured coated film after baking, and a coated can formed by using the composition to coat the inner surface of the can. SOLUTION: This water paint composition is formed by radically polymerizing a component (A) to be emulsified containing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer (A1) in the presence of a water solution or emulsion(2) of a polymer formed by containing a COOH group-containing component (B) which contains an acrylic copolymer (B1) having a COOH group of a number-average molecular weight of 20,000 to 100,000, a basic compound (C), and water (D), and the composition contains a composite polymer emulsion having a glass transition temperature of 50 to 120°C.
