PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hand dryer in which erroneous action can be prevented without making a detecting range of hands narrow in a hand inserting portion. SOLUTION: In a hand dryer having the hand inserting portion 1 opening to a front face constituted as a concave space recessed to a back face side, actuating a high pressure air flow generator by detecting the hands inserted into the hand inserting portion 1 using a hand detecting portion comprising a far infra red emitting element 13 and an infra red receiving element 14, converting to a high speed air flow and jetting it into the hand inserting portion 1, and blowing off the water adhering to the hands to dry the hands, the infra red emitting element 13 is provided so as to emit the light inclinedly and forward from an upper jaw portion 7 of the upper portion of the hand inserting portion 1 to a lower jaw portion 6 of the lower portion of the same, and the center output 16 of the infra red emitting element 13 is slightly displaced outward from left and right ends of the lower jaw portion, a detecting range A of the hand detecting portion is located within the hand inserting portion 1.
