960,983. Cooling reactors. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE (SERVICE NATIONAL). Oct. 23, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 40111/62. Heading G6C. In a carbon dioxide gas cooled nuclear reactor the ejection of fuel elements from the upper ends of the vertical fuel channels by the upward flow of coolant is prevented by permitting a flow of coolant gas into the channel upper sections during unloading. As shown, the core 1 is mounted in housing 6 and cooled by the flow of carbon dioxide gas, 9, through the vertical channels 3. A further flow of gas, 15, through ducts 14, enters the channels through orifices 12 which are opened during the fuel unloading operation. The plug 11 regulates the gas flow in the channel 9. In a further embodiment, not shown, the additional flow of gas to the upper section of the channel is supplied through the control rod channels. |
