The escalator or moving pavement has a drive for the handrail on the outer side. The handrail drive has a drive wheel (4.15) which drives the handrail on the outer side by friction engagement. Pressure rollers (4.2) installed on the handrail inner side press the handrail against the drive wheel. The drive wheel has a tire (4.1) in friction contact with the handrail on the outer side. The tire is installed on a rim (4.18) connected to the drive axis (4.16).
