The drive chain tensioning device uses a tensioning rail (12) positioned between 2 chain wheels (3,5) for the drive chain (7) and supported at bearing points (16) adjacent the chain wheels, each positioned such that the virtual rotation point of the rail end (11) coincides with the centre of the chain wheel. The tensioning rail is elastically deformable and biased against the drive chain, a damping device (14) enclosing the tensioning rail.
