PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-efficiency, long-service-life and polarized organic EL element by orienting a luminescent layer by a non-contact orientation process and by keeping a carrier transportation property. SOLUTION: This organic EL element 10 is composed by interposing the luminescent layer formed of an organic compound between a hole injection electrode 2 and an electron injection electrode 5. The organic EL element is characterized by that the luminescent layer is a liquid crystalline luminescent layer 4; and a layer 3 having liquid crystal orientation capability is formed at least on the side of one surface of the liquid crystalline luminescent layer 4.
