摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium evaluation method by which frequency characteristics of a magnetic recording medium is universally evaluated employing simple constitution. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium evaluation method for evaluating a magnetic recording medium in and from which signals are recorded and reproduced using a partial response system magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus includes: recording signals in the magnetic recording medium using a plurality of kinds of frequencies and reproducing the recorded signals in the magnetic recording medium for each of the a plurality of kinds of frequencies (S1); and measuring a frequency spectrum C1 of the reproduced output based on the levels of the signals reproduced for each of the a plurality of kinds of frequencies (S2), wherein a maximum value is calculated (S3) in the frequency segment which is equal to 2T or more and equal to 1T or less of the difference between a frequency spectrum C2 that is predetermined based on the transfer function of the partial response and the frequency spectrum C1, and the recording and reproducing characteristics of the magnetic recording medium is evaluated based on the above calculation result (S4).
