PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shaft seal device for a pump which can favorably shaft-seal drinking water or the like, without adversely affecting it biologically or hygienically. SOLUTION: The shaft seal device 1 for the pump is constituted so that the space between a liquid-seal chamber 4 and an impeller chamber 3 is shaft-sealed by an end surface contact type mechanical seal 6. Then a sealing ring 14 on the rotation side arranged at an impeller spindle 7, and a sealing ring 13 on the static side, arranged at a liquid-seal chamber casing 8, comes into relative rotation while sliding contact with each other. Water or fluidized paraffin is charged into the liquid-seal chamber 4. The sealing ring 14 on the rotation side is constituted of a silicon carbide material. The sealing ring 13 on the static side is constituted of composite silicon carbide material, which is constituted by dispersedly arranging globular carbon in the dense texture of the silicon carbide. The composite silicon carbide material has a 10 to 50μm spherical carbon content of 0.5 to 20 mass%, and a graphitized layer is formed at the outer edge of the spherical carbon.
