A butadiene hydrocarbon contacted in an inert hydrocarbon medium with a catalyst prepared by combining a cobalt compound in which cobalt has a valency of 2 or 3 and a hydrocarbyl aluminium contacting at least one hydrocarbon radical for every two aluminium atoms the radical being attached to aluminium by a carbon aluminium bond, as in the parent Specification, has also present before during or after the polymerization, a non-polymerizable ether. Specified ethers are dimethyl ether, diisopropyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, dioxane, furane, tetrahydrofurane, diphenyl ether, anisol, butadiene monoxide, styrene oxide, propylene oxide, and ethylene oxide and its condensates, e.g. phenol/ethylene oxide condensates. The other details are as in the parent Specification.
