[PROBLEMS] To provide drive technique of a general-purpose hold type display panel assuring a large degree of freedom of the black data insert ratio setting and facilitating application to a display panel having various devices structures. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] The output enable gates of the horizontal scan shift register are divided into M groups: {kM+1}-th gates, {kM+2}-th gates, ...{kM+M}-th gates (wherein k is an integer 0, 1, 2, ..., and M is an integer not smaller than 3) and can be opened/closed all at once in the group unit. The vertical direction control means performs control to output (M-1) image data and one black data from a source driver to a vertical signal line for each (M-1) period of horizontal scan period (H). The horizontal direction control means controls to open/close the output enable gate in each group unit, thereby evading the output competition between the image data write scan signal and the black data write scan signal.
