<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processor and an image forming apparatus for selecting a processing mode according to existence or absence of a data protecting means. <P>SOLUTION: When a power supply of an image forming apparatus is turned on, system check for detecting the configuration of mounted hardware is performed (S11), and a warm-up operation is started (S14). When the warm-up operation is completed (S17:YES), it is determined whether a security kit is mounted or not (S18). When it is determined that the security kit is mounted (S18:YES), a security mode is established (S20). When it is determined that the security kit is not mounted (S18:NO), a normal mode is established (S20).
