PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface sizing agent for paper manufacturing, which is excellent in storage stability and stability (mechanical stability) in a coating method under shearing force such as gate roll and size press through appropriately selecting protective colloid, and has an emulsion with low foaming as the active component and excellent in each kind of size effects, while excellent in feathering and bleeding aptitude in ink-jet printing while possessing the abilities. SOLUTION: This surface sizing agent for paper manufacturing has an aqueous emulsion composition as the main ingredient obtained by emulsifying and polymerizing each kind of polymeric monomers in the presence of protective colloid essentially having a basic acid modified rosin ester.
