A lighting apparatus for installation through a hole in a ceiling is disclosed. The lighting apparatus has a housing, a frame designed to rest on the upper surface of th e ceiling and at least one retention cable secured to the frame that passes through the opening in the frame and the hole in the ceiling to temporarily retain the frame against the upper surfac e of the ceiling while sliding the lamp housing through the ceiling and the opening in the frame. A method for installing a lighting fixture is also disclosed.
