<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent color misalignment even when color images are formed continuously and to minimize a decrease in throughput. <P>SOLUTION: A toner pattern 8 consisting of two or more colors for detecting the amount of color misalignment of toner images of different colors is formed on a rotating transport belt 10 before regular image formation. The toner pattern 8 is detected by a sensor 11. On the basis of the detected information, the color misalignment is adjusted so that the amount of misalignment of the plurality of colors is minimized. When the amount of color misalignment detected during the adjustment of the color misalignment is smaller than a predetermined value, the interval between the later color misalignment adjustments is made longer than the present set interval.
