<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceria-zirconia oxide powder suitable as a carrier for e.g. an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst by increasing the specific surface area of a powder such as ceria, zirconia, or a ceria-zirconia solid solution and allowing it to keep a large specific surface area even after exposure to a high temperature of 800 to 1,000°C. <P>SOLUTION: The ceria-zirconia oxide powder is obtained by adding an aqueous alkali solution to an aqueous solution of at least one of a cerium salt, a zirconium salt, and a mixture thereof to obtain a precipitate or to obtain thermally hydrolyzed deposit by heating the aqueous solution, dispersing the obtained precipitate or deposit in an alcohol (C<SB>n</SB>H<SB>n+1</SB>OH, wherein n=2 to 8) solvent, and azeotropically dehydrating by heating to obtain ceria-zirconia hydrated oxide particles surface-modified with alkoxy groups, and firing the obtained hydrated oxide at 300°C or higher. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
