PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To store a plurality of data files by validly utilizing the data storage region of a storage means in equipment, whose operating state and whose non-operating state is switched irregularly. SOLUTION: This data storage system is provided with a storage means having a data storage region for storing a data file, a selecting means for selecting the data file whose final access period is prior to a reference period from among the data files stored in the data storage region, an exchanging means for exchanging the data file selected by the selecting means into a state at a higher compression rate and a control means for controlling the replacement of the data file prior to exchange with the data file converted by the converting means for storage. The control means executes the selection by the selecting means, exchange by the exchanging means, and replacement of the data file by the control means by background processing corresponding to the start of the data storage system.
