A pressing piece (18) is provided for exerting a force on the rack (16) so that it is pressed in the direction of the steering pinion (12). The pressing piece comprises a spring damping element with a progressive characteristic. The spring damping element comprises an elastomer (22) which is firstly freely deformable, and subsequently only slightly compressible. An independent claim is included for a method of determining the play or bias in a rack-and-pinion steering system.
