Detergent compositions in powder form are produced by slowly spraying a non-ionic detergent on to an amount representing more than 20% by weight of the final product of a continuously moving alkali metal phosphate produced by a spray-drying process and having a bulk density below 550 g./l. and preferably below 400 g./l., the quantity of non-ionic detergent being so chosen that all the powder particles are converted into uniform grains and the droplet size of the sprayed non-ionic detergent being less than 300m , and preferably 20-150m , the quantity of non-ionic detergent being so chosen that the powder granules formed have an average diameter of 0,2-1 mm. Suitable non-ionic detergents are ethylene oxide condensates with alkylphenols, fatty alcohols, acids, amines and alkanolamides, and polyethylene glycols. The phosphates suitable for the process are sodium, potassium or mixed sodium-potassium ortho- or condensed phosphates, such as pyro- or tripoly-phosphates. The phosphate is suitably sprayed with the non-ionic detergent in a horizontally mounted rotary drum, and the product may thereafter be mixed with a fine grain spray-dried product having a particle diameter less than 0,1 mm. which may contain phosphates, sulphates, carbonates, silicates, hypochlorite, per salts, carboxymethylcellulose, optical brighteners, and anionic detergents such as alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, alkylaryl sulphonates, e.g. alkylbenzene sulphonate, and soap; if preferred, the anionic detergent may be sprayed on to the product obtained by spraying the phosphate with the non-ionic detergent, or on to the phosphate before it is sprayed with the non-ionic detergent. The final product is preferably treated with 1-5% of a highly voluminous water-insoluble adsorption agent, e.g. the phosphates and silicates of magnesium, calcium, and aluminium, or voluminous silica, and especially magnesium silicate.
