PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact traction drive mechanism for efficiently transmitting great torque. SOLUTION: This traction driven continuously variable transmission comprises a first input/output shaft 7 rotatably supported on a casing 10, a second input/output shaft 6 rotatably supported on the casing 10, a pair of pulley members 4 supported by the first input/output shaft 7 with a variable pulley separation distance, a toothed ring 3 supported at its outer periphery in engagement with the pulley members 4, a gear 2 supported by the second input/output shaft 6 for meshing with the teeth of the toothed ring 3, and a drive means for moving the toothed ring 3 around the center of the gear 2.
