The main vessel (2) freezes water and heats the ice produced. A feed circuit (8, 9, 18) delivers e.g. tap water into it. The intermediate vessel (5) has a pumping circuit (9, 16, 24) transferring water between them. A refrigeration unit (3, 4) freezes water in the main vessel. A heating system (6, 15, 23) is provided for ice in the main vessel. A drain circuit (9, 11, 24) removes residues. A delivery circuit (9, 10, 19) delivers product to the user. A control unit (1) is connected to a temperature transmitter (12) for water in the main vessel. It is also connected to upper and lower level sensing equipment (13, 14) in the main vessel. The controller instructs: supply of feedwater into the main vessel, pumping into the intermediate vessel, cooling, heating, residue removal and delivery of product to the user. The refrigeration unit is the evaporator of a conventional upright freezer. The main vessel is located below it.
