A toothbrush has (A) bristles of an electro-active plastic or of a material which can be alternatingly expanded, strained or bent out of shape by an electric charge or signal; and (B) an electrical distributor supplying the electro-active plastic with current signals or impulses. Independent claims are also claimed for toothbrushes which the bristles either contain electro-active plastics fibers or bands, are of electro-active plastic films, tubes or elastic rodlets, have >=2 electro-active fibers or filaments integrated along them on various sides at an angle, are partly or wholly covered by electro-active plastic films or sleeves, are of gold-plated films or rodlets, are of thin films or contain polymeric semiconductor elements especially of pentacene flat field-effect transistors, in each case there being electrical connection to an electrical distributor supplying the electro-active plastic with current signals or impulses so as to cause expansion, shortening or bending of the bristles.
