An assembly line for automobile production has two or more welding stations, e.g. geostations, for assembling the body parts using support jigs, frames etc. One layout has the welding stations (2, 3) along the assembly line, with the first station used to tack the components together and the second station for final welding. The stations are linked by a buffer system (4 to 6) and the welding stations are linked to a common power supply (18) and control module (21) for sequential processing. An alternate layout has parallel weld stations in a single process line. The welding stations can be laser welding or spot welding.
