PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the fastened condition of an input clutch arranged between the input shaft of a continuously variable transmission and the turbine shaft of a torque converter by using a turbine rotating speed sensor. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission has a primary pulley, a secondary pulley, and a belt bridged over between these pulleys. The input clutch is mounted between the turbine shaft of the torque converter and a primary shaft. The turbine rotating speed of the turbine shaft is detected by the turbine rotating speed sensor and the secondary rotating speed of the secondary shaft is detected by a secondary rotating speed sensor. When the transmission is changed over from a neutral range into a drive range or a reverse range with the operation of a select lever, the fastening of the input clutch is started, and when the ratio of the turbine rotating speed to the secondary rotating speed is a preset value or smaller during the creeping speed travel of a vehicle, the fastening of the input clutch is completed.
