PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an artificial marble made highly flame retardant without detriment to its flexibility in designing. SOLUTION: The artificial marble comprises an organic polymer (A), an inorganic filler (B), and a clay mineral (C) and desirably comprises an organic polymer (A-1) comprising monomer units derived from a radically polymerizable compound (a-1); an inorganic filler (B); and a layered composite material (D) obtained by mixing an aqueous dispersion of a clay mineral (C) wih an aqueous latex containing organic polymer particles (A-2) obtained by emulsion-polymerizing a radically polymerizable compound (a-2) and separating water from the resultant mixture. Such artificial marble is obtained, for example, by mixing an aqueous dispersion of a clay mineral (C) with an aqueous latex containing organic polymer particles (A-2) obtained by emulsion-polymerizing a radically polymerizable vinyl compound (a-2) and separating water from the resultant mixture to obtain a layered composite material (D), mixing the layered composite material (D) with an inorganic filler (B), and a radically polymerizable compound (a-1), and polymerizing and hardening the radically polymerizable compound (a-1).
