PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability of a range position detection switch for an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: Four switch bodies S1 to S4 of the range position detection switch 12 are divided into a first group provided with three switch bodies S1 to S3, and a second group provided with one switch body S4. 3-bit codes representing four range positions P, R, N, and D, and an intermediate state positions P-R, R-N, and N-D are provided by combining binary signal output from three switch bodies S1 to S3 of the first group. Three switch bodies S1 to S3 of the first group are set to switch signal values only of one switch body between two adjacent positions in the four range positions and three intermediate state positions. The switch body S4 of the second group detects the range positions P and N permitting engine start, and provides to output signals for P and N positions, which are different from other positions.
