PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame retardant styrenic resin composition excellent in flame retardancy, mechanical chracteristics(impact resistance), heat resistance, heat resistant creepage characteristics, light resistance and heat stability and further having no trouble in continuous compound moulding with a generally used extruder. SOLUTION: The flame retardant for a thermoplastic resin comprises a halogen-containing aromatic diol ether derivative represented by formula (I) having the softening point of 105-150°C and at most 20 wt.% of the component of the molecular weight in the range of 2,000-10,000. The use of the above flame retardant agent gives a flame retardant styrenic resin composition without the problem with compound-molding.
