PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyethylene glycol ether derivative which can be manufactured by a simple process under a mild condition without generating a by-product, and which is high in alkali resistance, biodegradability and surface-tension reducibility, and useful as a high functional nonionic surfactant low in critical micelle concentration. SOLUTION: The polyethylene glycol ether derivatie expressed by the general formula: R-NHOC-CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>n</SB>-Q (I) in which Q is a hydrogen atom or -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-CONH-R group; R is a 4-18C alkyl group; n is an integer of 3 to 50, the nonionic surfactant comprising it, and the method of manufacturing the polyethylene glycol ether derivative expressed by the above-formula (I) in which a monoalkyl acrylamide is reacted with a polyethylene glycol in the presence of a basic compound, are provided.
