PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus capable of recognizing a loading condition of each of option cassette feeders with a simple structure and performing switching operations among driving methods thereof. SOLUTION: This sheet recording apparatus, equipped with the option cassette feeders in multiple stages mounted thereon, feeds respective sheets from paper feeding sections corresponding to the option cassette feeders, and sequentially feeds the sheets into a recording section through a longitudinal path of the upper option cassette feeder, and performs recording in the recording section. In the recording apparatus, this sheet feeding device includes a discriminating device of automatically recognizing the loaded option cassette feeder, and a control device for switching the motor driving methods of the option cassette feeders in accordance with the loading state recognized by the discriminating device.
